Chin Surgery
Mentoplasty, or, chin surgery, is a surgical operation to reshape the chin either by enhancement with an implant or by reduction surgery of the bone. Surgery is performed on the lower jaw line and chin area to improve proportions of the face and to increase confidence and self-esteem.
Some solutions involve moving bone from the jaw forward in an operation called a mentoplasty or genioplasty. Alternatively, shaped silicone implants may be used to enhance chin projection. Conversely, bone may be removed to reduce an overly projecting chin. Furthermore, modifications to the upper and/or lower jaw may be advised in order to improve chewing dynamics and occlusion—or how the teeth fit together. These procedures may range from simple to very complex.
Dr. Toriumi may recommend chin surgery to a patient undergoing rhinoplasty in order to achieve better facial proportions and balance. A more balanced, better proportion of the chin may greatly affect the perceived size of the nose. The combination of a larger nose and a smaller chin creates a larger looking nose on lateral view. If the chin is augmented for additional projection, the nose will appear smaller on lateral view. This is done in an effort to keep both the front and lateral view in balance and harmony.
Dr. Toriumi will examine you and note your concerns. Then he will work with you and explain what you can expect from this procedure and his recommended course of action.
SUBMENTAL LIPOSUCTION
Submental liposuction is a common procedure that removes fatty tissue from your neck and under the chin. Excess fat in the neck may cause an aged appearance, and the removal of this fat may enhance your appearance and boost self-confidence.
Removal of fat by liposuction or lipectomy (cutting out fat) is occasionally combined with facelift or Platysma Plication (neck tightening) procedures and may return a patient’s youthful appearance or reduce areas of fullness.
Patients with good skin tone who have fatty deposits realize the most favorable results from facial liposuction alone. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin. In this case, combining facial liposuction with a facelift is recommended.
